All the stop-loss and target methods

The 23 methods: fixed, ATR, swing, trailing, EMA crossover, Heikin-Ashi and more.

Every method can be a stop-loss, a target, or both. The list is also on the page itself, under All the methods, where you can filter it and search it.

The list of all the methods in coloured groups
The methods in five groups. Tags show whether a method works as a stop-loss or a target, and whether it uses candles.

Fixed distance

  • Percent from entry, and Points from entry: a set distance from your entry price (the average price of the position).
  • Exact price: one price you choose.
  • Rupees on the position: close when the open profit or loss reaches an amount in rupees. Size your risk first, then let the stop follow.

Volatility and structure

  • ATR multiple: a multiple of the average true range, the typical candle size. The distance fits the stock's own volatility.
  • Swing low / high: just beyond the lowest low (long) or highest high (short) of the last candles.
  • Previous candle low / high: a tight stop under the last closed candle.
  • Risk-reward multiple: a target that is a multiple of your risk. 2 means you aim to make twice what you risk. It needs a stop-loss rule with a fixed level.

Indicator levels

  • EMA level: a moving average acts as the level.
  • VWAP level: today's volume-weighted average price acts as the level.

Trailing

  • Move to break-even: after the price has moved your way by some points, the stop moves to your entry. The trade can then no longer lose.
  • Trailing percent, and Trailing points: the level follows the best price and never moves back.
  • Chandelier (ATR trail): the level follows the best price at a multiple of the ATR.
  • Swing trail: the level steps up behind each new swing low (long).
  • EMA trail: the level follows a moving average.
  • Heikin-Ashi trail: the level follows the lowest low of the last Heikin-Ashi candles. These smoothed candles keep the trail with a trend.
  • Step trail: every time the price gains a step, the level moves up in a jump.
  • Give back a share of the profit: close when the open profit falls by a percent from its best.
  • Trailing rupees: close when the profit and loss falls a number of rupees from its best. Works for a strategy too.

Signals on a candle close

  • EMA crossover (PCO / NCO): see the next page.
  • Heikin-Ashi colour change: closes when a Heikin-Ashi candle turns against you (red for a long, green for a short).
  • At a time of day: closes at a set time, India time, whatever the price.
