Step ladder

A price every step, and a quantity at each step. Example: base 100, step 0.5, 10 lots at each step gives orders at 100, 99.5, 99 and so on. Choose equal sizes, bigger at each step or smaller at each step.

Direction: Top to down (buy lower) places limit orders that wait for dips. Down to up (buy higher) goes the other way and places each step only when the price reaches it, so you add as the price rises. For a Sell plan the two directions are reversed.

The other methods

  • Price levels: your own list of prices and shares. Each level is a resting limit order or a stop level.
  • Time slices (TWAP): equal slices over a set time, with a small random shift in time.
  • % of volume: every few seconds take a set share of what has just traded.
  • Iceberg: only a small clip is in the market at a time, and it follows the price.
  • Huge order (block): thousands of lots, cut to the exchange limit per order and to a slippage budget you set.
  • On EMAs: place pieces when the price touches the 20, 50 or 200 EMA.
  • On VWAP: pieces at the day's VWAP and at bands above or below it.
  • On anchored VWAP: VWAP from a start you pick, or from an automatic anchor such as today's open or yesterday's high.
